This stragic plan was developed over a period of many months in 2009 by Dean Norma Allewell and the College's Academic Executive Leadership Team (Associate Deans Robert Infantino and Arthur N. Popper, and department chairs Norma Andrews (CBMG), Michael Doyle (CHEM), Charles Mitter (ENTM) and Richard Payne (former chair of BIOL) with contributions from several staff members in the Dean's office and feedback from many members of the College. The Board of Visitors also provided valuable perspectives. This is the third strategic plan that the College has developed under the leadership of Dean Norma Allewell (the previous versions were the 2001 Strategic Plan and the 2004 Strategic Plan).

From the Exectuive Summary of the 2009 Strategic Plan

The research, educational, and outreach programs of the College of Chemical and Life Sciences are directed at deepening our scientific understanding of the nature of life and the universe in which we live, and using that knowledge to develop new approaches to improving human health and sustaining the global environment. Thus, chemistry and the biological sciences offer powerful approaches to developing new solutions to contemporary challenges in health, climate, the environment, and energy, as well as in many other areas.

Over the next decade, the College will become a national leader in research and education in the biological and chemical sciences, and, more importantly, we will also develop the capacity to sustain that leadership on a national and international scale. Our innovative research programs will address major human health and environmental challenges of the 21st century, and our programs will be ranked in the top 15 among public research universities in our disciplines. We will sustain vibrant and rigorous academic programs that prepare our undergraduate and graduate students for a lifetime of achievement and service to society. Our outreach and international programs will be recognized for their excellence and impact -- locally, nationally, and globally.
