An integral part of the College of Chemical & Life Sciences are the distinguished members of the Board of Visitors:
Dr. John F. Alderete, Ph.D.
Professor of Molecular Biosciences and Associate Vice Provost of Research, Washington State University
Dr. Alderete is Professor of Molecular Biosciences and Associate Vice Provost of Research at Washington State University. He received his Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, and did post-doctoral work at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His research focuses on the most common non-viral sexually transmitted agent, Trichomonas vaginalis, and has been published widely in peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. James F. Battey
Director, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Battey is Director of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) at NIH. He earned a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology and M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. Dr. Battey's laboratory focuses on the molecular genetic analysis of biologic responses mediated by mammalian bombesin-like peptides and their receptors.
Dr. Constance Cepko (B.S., '76)
Professor of Genetics, Harvard Medical School
Dr. Cepko and her colleagues study the development of the central nervous system of vertebrates, with an emphasis on the development of the retina. They are also studying the mechanisms of photoreceptor degeneration, particularly as it can occur as a failure of development. She received her Ph.D. in biology, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her B.S. in biochemistry and microbiology from the University of Maryland.
Dr. David P. Corey
Department of Neurobiology, Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Corey is Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. He received his B.A. in physics from Amherst College and his Ph.D. in neurobiology from the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Corey studies mechanisms of hearing, in particular the biophysics and molecular biology of sensory reception in the hair cells of the inner ear. He is also Co-Director of the Harvard Medical School Center for Hereditary Deafness.
Ms. Jennifer Foley (B.S., '82)
Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, HeartWare, Inc.
Ms. Foley recently joined HeartWare, Inc., an early phase device company, as Vice President of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs. She received her B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Maryland and her Master of Business Administration degree from Boston University. Prior to HeartWare, she worked at Boston Scientific Corporation (BSC) as Vice President, Clinical Sciences, Clinical Program Management and Operations.
Dr. Ann Hobbs (B.S., '68)
Partner, Venable, LLP
Dr. Hobbs is a partner in the Washington, DC based law firm Venable LLP. She focuses her practice on patent prosecution, opinions and client counseling in the areas of biochemistry, biotechnology, chemistry and pharmaceuticals. Dr. Hobbs is a member of the American Bar Association, the D.C. Bar Association, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She earned a J.D., with honors, from the University of Maryland School of Law, 1991; her
Ph.D. from University of Maryland, Baltimore, 1973; and her
B.S. from the University of Maryland, College Park, 1968.
Dr. Wei-Wu He
General Partner, Emerging Technology Partners, LLC.
Dr. He is a General Partner and Co-founder of Emerging Technology Partners, L.L.C. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine and conducted cancer research at Mayo Clinic and at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. He received his MBA from the Wharton School. He has been awarded over 20 U.S. patents and has more than twenty original research publications.
Dr. Willie E. May
Director of the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Dr. May is Director of the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory (CSTL), one of seven technical Operational Units within the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. May received his Bachelor of Science degree from Knoxville College and his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. In addition to his leadership responsibilities at NIST, Dr. May is Chair, Organic Analysis Working Group, Consultative Committee on the Quantity of Material (Chemistical Measurements), and International Committee for Weights and Measures.
Mr. G. Wade Miller
Executive Director of the WateReuse Association.
Wade Miller is the Executive Director of the WateReuse Association – a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance the beneficial and efficient use of water resources through education, sound science, and technology using reclamation, recycling, reuse, and desalination. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland (B.S., Chemistry 1971). Mr. Miller is also Executive Director of the WateReuse Foundation, which conducts applied research on water reuse and desalination.
Ms. Jeanne L. Narum
Director, Independent Colleges Office and Project Kaleidoscope.
Ms. Narum is Director of the Independent Colleges (ICO) Office and of Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL). ICO Director since 1988, she assists select liberal arts colleges in relations with federal agencies and programs. As PKAL Director, Ms. Narum has a variety of responsibilities, all focused on building leadership at the institutional and national levels to ensure that American undergraduates have access to robust learning experiences in STEM fields.
Dr. Robert Rosenthal (B.S. ’78)
President & CEO, Magellan Biosciences, Inc.
Dr. Rosenthal is the founding president and chief executive officer of Magellan Biosciences, Inc., located in Chelmsford, MA. Dr. Rosenthal holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Maryland, an M.S. in chemistry from State University of New York (Buffalo), and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Emory University. Dr. Rosenthal also holds an AEA Executive M.B.A. from Stanford University.Most recently, Dr. Rosenthal was president and CEO of Boston Life Sciences, an R&D development-stage biopharmaceutical company.
Dr. Steven M. Rotter, M.D. (B.S. ’82)
Owner and Director of the Center for Skin Surgery & Skin Cancer Outpatient Surgical Hospital, Vienna, Virginia.
Dr. Rotter is the Owner and Director of the Center for Skin Surgery & Skin Cancer Outpatient Surgical Hospital in Vienna, VA. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Dr. Rotter attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He then completed two years of residency in general surgery, followed by a three-year dermatology residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, during which he became the Chief Resident in Dermatology.
Mr. Nicholas Simon (B.S. ’76)
Managing Director, Clarus Ventures, LLC.
Mr. Simon is a General Partner at MPM Capital. Mr. Simon joined MPM’s San Francisco office in October 2001. Prior to joining MPM, Mr. Simon was Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Collabra Pharma, Inc., a pharmaceutical development company. He is also on the Advisory Council of the Gladstone Institute, a private not-for-profit research institute affiliated with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Mr. Simon received a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Maryland and an M.B.A. in Marketing from Loyola College.
Mr. Henry N. Wixon, J.D. (M.S. ’80, B.S. ’76) (Chair)
Partner, Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, LLP, Washington, DC.
Mr. Wixon is a Partner in the firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr, L.L.P., in Washington, DC. He is Vice Chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department and much of his practice involves counseling start-up and small-to-medium-size biotechnology companies on intellectual property and technology transfer issues that are crucial to their corporate strategy. Mr. Wixon was awarded his J.D. degree from George Washington University, and he holds an M.S. degree in neuropharmacology from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Dr. John L. Young, M.D. (B.S. '71)
Partner and Co-founder, Genetic Consultants.
Dr. Young is a partner and co-founder of Genetic Consultants, one of the first and oldest private, non-hospital based, prenatal genetic practices in the United States. Dr. Young received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Maryland, and completed his OB/GYN residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was one of the first obstetricians to practice at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, and currently practices pre-natal genetics in Rockville.
