Partnering with the Community and Beyond
In addition to educating undergraduate students, developing new graduate researchers and extending research through the expertise of our faculty, the College of Chemical and Life Sciences reaches out to the community through important linkages to the community, the state, the nation, and the world.
Jump Start Program - invites 120 promising young high school scientists to participate in a week-long summer science immersion program at the University of Maryland.
Bug Camp provides students ages 7-11 with the opportunity to learn basic science concepts using insects and other arthropods and promotes a positive attitude towards science by using insects as models.
Maryland Association of Biology Teachers - founded to increase the knowledge related to the biological sciences, promote new methods relative to the teaching of life sciences, protect and maintain high ethics and standards of the teaching profession, and recognize special accomplishments in biology teaching.
The web-based Masters of Life Science program enrolls close to 300 in-service high school teachers from 40 states in this program that helps teachers expand their knowledge of current research areas in the biological, biochemical and biomedical sciences.
Science in the Evening, is a post-baccalaureate program that helps prepare graduates for medical school, dental school, veterinary school, biotechnology/biosciences graduate programs, or other professional advancement.
Analytical Services - The college provides easy access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for chemical and biological analyses. Services are available to all scientific communities as well as educational programs. Resources include: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (EPR), Mass Spectroscopy, and X-ray Crystallography. Visit also the Mass Spectrometry Facility
A Collaborative Agreement between the Center for Comparative and Evolutionary Biology of Hearing (C-CEBH) and the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders provides research and training opportunities for faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry works closely with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
The Department of Entomology is an active participant in the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service.
Corporate Partnerships
The College of Chemical and Life Sciences also works to build bridges with corporations that offer excellent technology and training resources for our faculty and students.
Apple Computer Inc. - The College and Apple Computer Inc. have partnered on several levels including sponsorship of our Bioscience Research & Technology Review Day and a symposium entitled "Innovative Technologies for Emerging Biotech Companies."
The Apple Computer Corporation made a video about how the College of Chemical and Life Sciences utilizes Macintosh computers for scientific research. The video "University of Maryland and the Mac" highlighted the multiple ways our research groups have advanced their work by using Mac computers. Apple was also interested in the approach and philosophy of the IT Group within the College. Featured faculty and stsaff include: Milliard Alexander, Steve Wolniack, Mike Landavere and Dean Allewell. In addition to the video, a profile story also describes the research efforts of Charles Delwiche and Michael Cummings.
EXCELS Internship Program - Through the EXCELS (Experiential Collaboration & Education in the Life Sciences) internship program, the College of Chemical and Life Sciences partners with local bioscience and biotechnology companies, nonprofit organizations and federal research laboratories to offer real-world training for undergraduate students. In turn, EXCELS partners receive valuable technical support from capable individuals who bring a new perspective to the organization. EXCELS partners are invited to participate in our annual Internship and Job Fair, take part in Career Daze professional development workshops and publicize internship and job opportunities via our student email newsletter and the internship Web site.
