  • Revolutionary Plastics Prove Perfect Pitch

    Lawrence Sita, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who has invented a technology that can create an infinite variety of safe, pure plastics, won the title of "Best Inventor Pitch" at this year's Bioscience Day on Nov. 13.
  • Scorpion Toxin Makes Fungus Lethal to Insect Pests

    Entomology professor Raymond St. Leger has discovered how to use scorpion genes to create a hyper-virulent fungus that can kill specific insect pests, including the mosquitoes that carry malaria and a beetle that destroys coffee crops
  • American Association for the Advancement of Science Honors David Poeppel and Russ Dickerson

    The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) elected David Poeppel, professor, Biology and Linguistics, and Russell Dickerson, professor, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and professor and chair of the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, as Fellows in October 2007. Poeppel was elected by the section on Linguistics and Language Science, and Dickerson by the section on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Science. Read more about their research >>
  • Taiwan Government Gives Research Award to Spencer Benson

    Dr. Spencer Benson (Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics), Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence , received a 2007 Taiwan Studies: Faculty Research Award from the Taiwan Ministry of Education to study science education in Taiwan. He will be hosted by Drs. Judy Chang and Chen-yung Lin at the National Taiwan Normal University, Nov. 16-Dec. 01 2007. The award was facilitated by UMD collaborations with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington DC.
  • American Society for Plant Biologists Recognizes Elisabeth Gantt and Heven Sze
    Elisabeth Gantt, Distinguished University Professor, and Heven Sze, Professor, both from the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics, were named as Fellows of the American Society for Plant Biologists in July 2007. The award is granted in recognition of Distinguished and Long-term Contributions to Plant Biology. This ASPB honor, established in 2007, may be granted to no more than 0.2% of the membership.
