Dr. Tobin Marks, Department of Chemistry Alumnus
Receives National Medal of Science
Dr. Tobin Marks, recipient of the Bachelors of Science degree from the
University of Maryland, is to receive the National Medal of Science,
this nation's highest scientific honor. Marks is Professor of
Chemistry at Northwestern University and has been recognized as one
of this University's Hall of Fame Alumni. Marks' research is
internationally recognized for innovation in the design and
construction of new substances having important chemical, physical
and/or biological properties. His work is credited with having major
impact on catalysis, and he is a leader in the development and
understanding of single-site olefin polymerization catalysis (now a
multibillion dollar industry) as well as in the study of new
materials having remarkable electrical, mechanical, interfacial and
photonic properties.
The National Medal of Science honors individuals for pioneering
scientific research in a range of fields, including physical,
biological, mathematical, social, behavioral and engineering
sciences, that enhances our understanding of the world and leads to
innovations and technologies that give the United States its global
economic edge. The National Science Foundation administers the award,
which was established by the Congress in 1959.
During his career, Marks has received numerous awards, including some
of the most prestigious national and international awards in the
chemical sciences. He is a member of the National Academy of
Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the
Leopoldina, the German Academy of Natural Scientists.
