Post-Doctoral Association Holds Inaugural Event

Tue, Aug 25, 2009

The College of Chemical and Life Sciences has more than 100 research scientists working in post-doctoral positions that contribute to the college's vital research programs. On August 24, 2009, 22 post-doctoral researchers representing three of the College's departments gathered to celebrate the formation of the College's Post-Doctoral Association. The post-doc attendees were welcomed by College Dean Norma Allewell and Associate Vice President for Research Robert Dooling . Both gave introductory remarks about the importance of post-docs to the College and campus and how the post-doctoral experience at UM can be improved. The speakers and post-docs then enjoyed ice cream from the UM Dairy and mingled while discussing research, swapping stories about pending job searches and escapades of their children, and learning about post-doctoral benefits issues.

Founded at the initiative of College post-doctoral researchers and administration in 2008, the mission of the Post-Doctoral Association is to improve the training and success of its post-doctoral members by providing career development and community-building opportunities. To this end, the Association has developed a series of career development workshops and fellowship events for Fall and Winter; all post-doctoral researchers in the College are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The association's leadership includes Joseph Ross, President (Biology/Haag lab), Chris Hofmann, Vice-President (Biology/Carleton lab), Jonathan Leshin, Secretary (CBMG/Dinman lab), Reade Roberts, Member-at-Large (Kocher lab),  and Ruth Timme, Member-at-Large (Delwiche lab). Associate Dean Arthur Popper advises the Post-Doctoral Association.
