The First Annual Cohen Foundation Biophysics Symposium on November 17 brought together seven distinguished speakers who presented on a variety of topics related to single molecule biophysics, including DNA replication, FRET studies of protein folding, and DNA topology and topisomerases studied with magnetic tweezers. The event was hosted by Dave Thirumalai, Professor, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and director of the Maryland Biophysics Program. Dean Norma Allewell gave the opening remarks. Speakers included:
- Antoine van Oijen, Harvard Medical School
- William A. Eaton, National Institutes of Health
- Keir C. Neuman, National Institutes of Health
- Ashok A. Deniz, Scripps Research Institute
- Julio M. Fernandez, Columbia University
- Laura Finzi, Emory University
- Arthur La Porta, University of Maryland
Funding for the symposium came from The Cohen Foundation of Maryland. The Cohen Foundation was established in 2006 by Brad and Margo Cohen, Smith School of Business Maryland alumni, to support worthy scientific research. The Foundation particularly focuses on new and inventive approaches to understand and treat heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The Foundation chose to direct their funds to The Center for Biomolecular Structure and Organization, a research program at the University of Maryland directed by Dr. George Lorimer.
